Nigeria’s growing Fulani conflict stokes Biafran cause – UK Daily Mail

Fulani herdsmen
The Fulani herdsmen attacked at 6:00 am, just after morning prayers in Nimbo, an idyllic village in southeast Nigeria where farmers grow yams and pawpaws.

At first the villagers thought it was a joke. The nomadic cattle rearers, who have clashed with farmers over grazing rights in central Nigeria for decades, had never come this far south.

But then they saw 20 young men descend from the hills and emerge from the palm tree forest, shooting AK-47 assault rifles in the air and waving machetes.

“We started hearing the sound of gunshots everywhere. They shot so many people,” Kingsley Oneyebuchie, a 31-year-old civil servant, told AFP.

“They shot one of my brothers, they used a knife on my dad, they killed so many,” he said from his hospital bed in the nearby town of Nsukka, bare-chested and wearing only red athletic shorts.

Oneyebuchie ran his fingers tentatively over a 20-centimetre (eight-inch) track of blue surgical stitches at the base of his scalp.

“They used machete on me. After using machete on me, they thought that I died,” he said.

Oneyebuchie was lucky to survive the attack on April 25. At least 10 people are thought to have been killed and scores of others injured.
– Ethnic lines –
In the past year, raids by Fulani herdsmen have increased in the southeast.

The worst happened some 200 kilometres (125 miles) away in Agatu, Benue state, in late February, where hundreds of people — most of them Christian farmers — were reportedly killed.

The bloodshed mirrors that after Nigeria gained independence in 1960, when Igbos dominant in the mainly Christian southeast, were pitted against Hausa and Fulani in the largely Muslim north.

The ethnic violence led to two military coups, hundreds of deaths — and ultimately a civil war, when the southeast broke away and declared an independent Republic of Biafra in 1967.

Some one million Igbos died either fighting for the fledgling nation or from starvation and disease in a brutal conflict that by its end in 1970 left the southeast broken.

Now, stricken villagers maintain the only solution to the Fulani attacks — and perceived northern domination of political posts from the president downwards — is an independent state.

“We need to know that this is Igbo and this is Fulani,” said Oneyebuchie. “We want them to leave our place so that we will be free.”

– Growing conflict –

According to the Global Terrorism Index 2015 report, “Fulani militants” killed 1,229 people in 2014 — up from 63 in 2013 — making them the “fourth most deadly terrorist group” in the world.

Most deaths happened in Nigeria’s religiously mixed so-called Middle Belt states.

But the apparent migration south into Igbo territory is being used by an increasingly hardline pro-Biafra movement as an indication the Nigerian government doesn’t serve or protect the region and is stoking discontent in the southeast.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, a northern Hausa-Fulani who opposes the pro-Biafran movement, took until late April to speak out about the herdsmen, saying he had ordered military and police to “take all necessary action to stop the carnage”.

He has proposed setting up a grazing plan that includes the establishment of cattle ranches and importing grass feed from Brazil.

Critics argue his response is too little, too late and overly ambitious.

“I have yet to hear this government articulate a firm policy of non-tolerance for the serial massacres,” Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka said recently, describing the ranch plan as “optimistic”.

– ‘A second genocide’ –
The arrest and detention of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu last year catapulted him and his more hardline pressure group into the mainstream.

“Buhari has authorised a second genocide on Biafra,” IPOB, which has been campaigning for Kanu’s release through public protests, said about the herdsmen.

“Biafrans are on the verge of being exterminated,” it added.

In Nimbo, the farmers use less emotive language but their underlying message is the same.

Today the village is deserted, with shiny new padlocks fastened on the wood doors of mud-brick houses and hectares of cassava and melon crops abandoned until safer times.

“We have been complaining to government, complaining to everyone, no help,” said Thaddeus Okenwa, a 65-year-old cassava farmer with a raspy voice and muscular hands.

“We are now just managing because nothing goes normal. If they can give us our own independence, let’s go.

“We don’t pray for war now, but this (the Fulani issue) can cause it because you can’t be a stranger in your home.”

IPOB Press Release, BIAFRA IS NOT ABOUT THE IGBOS ALONE

IPOB

The nation of Biafra or Biafraland is beyond the areas occupied by the Igbo-speaking people of Biafra. For the avoidance of doubt, Biafra spans from Itsekiriland on the western boundary with Oduduwa to Bakassi on the eastern boundary with the Cameroons. Biafra also stretched from Idoma and Igala lands on the northern boundary with Arewa or Northern Nigeria to the Bight of Biafra which is south of the beautiful island of Bonny. In the present-day contraption called Nigeria, the nation of Biafra consists of the following states: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers. Biafra also includes Igbanke in Edo state, Igala in Kogi state, and Idoma in Benue state.

The footprints of Biafra listed above show that this great nation is not populated by only the Igbo-speaking people. It is also important to note that the last head of state and commander-in-chief of Biafra was not from the Igbo-speaking area of Biafralnd. During the war of genocide levied on Biafra by Nigeria and Britain, there were brave Biafran soldiers, field commanders, scientists, civil servants, technocrats, musicians/artists, and astute journalists/broadcasters who were not from Igbo-speaking areas of Biafraland.

Biafra is a nation where different languages are spoken but irrespective of the varying languages, the people have a common value system, four market days, and a unique traditional clothing (two-piece wrapper) for every Biafran woman. It is instructive to note that Igbo is just one of the languages in Biafraland. Even the Igbo language has different dialects as someone travels from one community to the other or from one state to another state.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is using this press release to warn some people who speak or write out of ignorance on the history and geography of the nation of Biafra. Recently, some self-serving individuals and moribund groups have pigeon-holed Biafra into Igbo. They interchange and juxtapose Biafra and Igbo as if both are synonyms. The restoration of the nation of Biafra is not an exclusively Igbo cause but involves all the rest of the clans in Biafra. Therefore, it is misleading for any misguided relevance-seeking individual or group to seek to restrict Biafra to an Igbo affair through their mischievous newspaper interviews.

We caution and advice newspaper proprietors and editors to obtain clarifications from the Directorate of State of IPOB headquartered in Vitoria-Spain before going to press because many desperate individuals are seeking to popularize their activities by using the hallowed name of IPOB and misinforming the public with lies and subterfuge. These individuals who are sponsored by the murderous Nigerian government of Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari and acting out the script written by corrupt Igbo politicians should refrain from this unsavory act.

Biafra is not about the Igbos alone but Biafra is a blessed nation of people with common value system. The public must ignore and stay away from anyone or group that equates Biafra with Igbo. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is not for only Igbo-speaking people and will never be for only Igbo-speaking people.
Not all Biafrans are Igbos!!!

Self- defence is an English noun that can be defined as " the defence of one's person or interests, especially through the use of physical force."

Biafra shooting ground.

The law defines it as " the use of reasonable force to protect oneself or members of the family from bodily harm from the attack of an aggressor, if the defender has reason to believe he/she/they is/are in danger." In all this definitions, it is clear as crystal that self-defense is not stated as a crime! One who is in danger or whose family are in danger has the right to defence even if it warrants the use of arms. Over the years, right from 1960 even before the Nigeria - Biafra civil war, we have been constantly attacked and killed by the Northern Islamic jihadists whose mission is to annihilate Biafrans and have their children converted to Islam.

Records of Biafra genocides began in Nigeria as early as 1945 when Biafrans were killed in Jos. In 1953, they were also killed in Kano. In 1966,  more than 60,000 Biafrans  were murdered in the streets of the Northern states.  In May 29, 1967 alone, about 200,000 Biafran men, women and children were massacred again in Northern Nigeria! The list is endless. When Biafrans reacted on this incessant killings by the Islamic Northern oligarch, and declared self independent, Nigeria declared war of attrution on them.

The whole world knew Biafra went to the war to defend themselves. It was a war for survival. God being on Biafra side the Nigeria war of attrution meant to last only two weeks lingered for a whole three years! They thought Biafrans would be easily captured like rats and killed.  Stories of the war are always officially told to favour Nigeria and put the genocidal armies that led the war such as; Babangida, Buhari, Obasanjo, Gowon and others alive and dead as " hero's" instead of seeing them as war criminals they are. After the deceptive "no victory , no vanquished" declaration at the end of the war, it was a scheme meant to allow Nigeria  Islamic military junta rest from the shock of being unable to decimate the entire Biafra as earlier planned despite their use of hunger strategy to eliminate us, and get to the drawing board for the next line of action.

Those plans they drew after the war in 1970, is what they have been carefully exhibiting to this time. Any slightest provocation quickly genders to massacre of the Biafrans in the North.  A cartoon of Prophet Muhammed done all the way in Denmark sparked riot and killing of Biafrans in Northern Nigeria, burning their churches, shops and  destroying their means of their livelihoods. In all this aggressions, Biafra always tow the path of peace even when they are the losers. They have been fantastically playing one Nigeria to the detriment of the freedom and that of their future generation.

But the Islamic jihadists would always keep on killing us with impunity. They are unrepentant! Now, they have brought their killing spree  right to our own door steps! They have killed the royal father of Ubulu-ukwu, HRM Ofule III, and have gone after others in other places of Biafra land.  Recently they attacked Nimbo Community, and extended their aggression to other places like Nsukka, Udi, Oko in Delta state, Aguleri, Aba, Irete in Owerri where they killed twin brothers., Orlu, Asa, etc. In all these killings, Biafra have seen that the Hausa/Fulani jihadists wants their total annihilation.
Do we continue to keep calm, fold our arms and watch them decimate us? Do we still pretend that "nothing is going to happen"? Have you not seen that your lives are in danger? Is it not the time to rise and defend yourselves and your father land?  It is time to act! Let Biafrans rise up! Unite and fight manfully for your Nation. A stitch in time saves nine.

I am Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Indigenous people of Biafra and also the director of radio Biafra.I have restored Biafra without a gunshot, I have destroyed Nigeria with truth and i have conquered Nigeria with Chiukwuokike abiama.

Nnnamdi kanu
I am Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Indigenous people of Biafra and
also the director of radio Biafra.I have restored Biafra without
a gunshot, I have destroyed Nigeria with truth and i have conquered Nigeria with Chiukwuokike abiama.

They waited for me to bomb and shoot, but i refused to use metallic bullet and atomic bombs, i only used intellectual bullets and bombs and i have flawlessly won the war.I stood just ordinary radio station and propagated the gospel of Chukwuokikeabiama,
the word of God is power and that power have destroyed Nigeria and restored Biafra. I observed freedom of speech and fearlessly preached truth, I am fearless even before death because am prophesy of over 400 years ago. If God is not man then his prophesy shall come to pass and those that stand against God will know Chiukwuokike abiama is creation.

I have lawfully followed stipulated procedures for self determination and have never been involved in any form of violence or crime, I have always told you Biafrans to be disciplined and law-abiding and you have made me proud. I am grateful that we are whiter than white and whiter than snow. We have no dishonour neither do we have any spot, they have killed us mercilessly and we have never killed back yet they arrested us and tried to break us to betray Biafra. They arrested me for saying the truth, nothing but the truth. They arrested me for demanding Biafra, they arrested me for embracing freedom of speech. They conspired and arrested me for being lawful and demanding attention. They arrested me because peace is prohibited in Nigeria; they arrested me because dialogue is impossible in Nigeria. They arrested me because I refused to take up arms, they arrested me because I defeated them intellectually. When a man is defeated by reason, he sought to discharge his frustration on justice. I am a prisoner of conscience and I am sure the world still have conscience.

I am Nnamdi Kanu, I have chosen death, I shall die for Biafra and let my death give my generation a better life, let my death be a guarantee for a better future, let my death be your smile and let my death end your marginalization, subjugation, slavery and tears. I am Nnamdi Kanu the lion that chose death over the abuse of his people. I instead die than renounce Biafra, give me Biafra or kill me is where I stand.I have been arrested for nothing, I am a prisoner of conscience, they are here to break me, to make me renounce Biafra but they don’t know me,they don’t know Biafra is my religion and they don’t know renouncing Biafra is a death sentence, is like committing suicide. In their widest dream shall I commit suicide and I assure them that days of reckoning will come, for Chiukwuokikeabiama shall avenge the death of His children. I have taken an oath with the name of God that I shall never betray or give up Biafra because I knew this day will come. I am physically and psychologically prepared for this period. I took the oath and staked my family, my generations and everything I am, and so giving up Biafra in any condition is impossible, even at gun point, I will only accept my inevitable death than
renounce Biafra.

I have been arrested before but this time is more severe, the harder the price is the closer the Kingdom of God, even Yawehesua prayed that only if this cup will pass over him.
They came with every tactics they know to deceive me into signing off Biafra, they promised me freedom, heaven and earth, but I told devil to get behind me for the Kingdom of God worth nothing man can offer. I am more intelligent than them and I will defeat them to a point nothing will be left to fight for, Biafra will be and it has come to stay. I appeared in the court on 19th Feb 2016, in the face of this persecution to coerce me into giving up Biafra, I wore a clean white cloth and tagged Biafran flag under the pocket of my white lace. I tagged the flag there because that is where life is and this is to tell you that Biafra is why i breathe. I will never ever disappoint you and will die for Biafra to come.

The Biafran flag badge tagged on my white lace is to remind the world that I am resolute and shall never in this life accept their gold to sale Biafra. The world has no option except giving me Biafra and everything in Nigeria shall be at risk if anything happens to me. Biafrans love me and together we have chosen death or give us Biafra, should anything happen to me then my command remains.
Meanwhile, I have followed you great Biafrans and I must confess that I am satisfied, you have made me proud and my message to you all is to Stay strong, remain resolute and focused. We must not give up, we should continue pushing strong, we should continue our peaceful protest because it is frustrating Nigerian government and we must keep spreading the message of Biafra and at the end we shall win.
